The hammock is a very unique and interesting creation with a powerful story. With a deep ancient history and a rich heritage, the hammock is much more than the commodity item that we often attribute it as in its current state.
Created more than 1,000 years ago in Central and South American countries by the Mayan Indians, the first hammocks were initially constructed from the bark of the Hamack tree. Part of an extremely progressive culture, the Mayan Indians were an architecturally advanced people, the creators of an innovative writing system, and among many other astounding accomplishments, they provided society with a variety of astronomers and mathematicians.
Though the hammock is believed to have joined the North American culture as much as 800 – 900 years ago, the first time that it has been notably recorded to have been discovered was by Columbus upon his arrival in the “New World”. Columbus witnessed a group of Bahamian natives resting in the middle of the day on hammocks and was fortunate enough to bring a load back to Europe upon his return. The hammock eventually became a fixation on naval ships and doubled as protection against minor fire arm attacks. Conversely, Britain adopted the hammock as a sleeping solution in prison cells because it was viewed as a space-saver. Unfortunately, the hammock didn't last very long in British prisons because it was hung with golden brass hooks that inmates shortly after began to use as weaponry.
The hammock became more popular in North America in the late 1800s, in part, due to the wider versions and softer materials that were used to enhance comfort. In many professions, hammocks served to provide more than one purpose. For fishermen, the product was used for rest as well as for work as its netting allowed it to provide dual functioning.
Currently, there are over 20 U.S. hammock manufacturers that are all part of a unique, multi-million dollar industry. As with any versatile product, the hammock is now made in a variety of styles and materials including the classic American rope hammock, fabric hammocks, imported hammocks, Brazilian hammocks and quilted hammocks among others.
